Rankin/Bass TV Holiday Favorites Collection (The Little Drummer Boy Book II / Pinocchio's Christmas / The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold / The Stingiest Man in Town)

More Rankin/Bass mistreatment
About the shows--I love them all. I have been a Rankin/Bass addict since I first saw "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" on my black-and-white TV, and for most of my life I would carefully check the TV guide and schedule my life around making sure I watched all of the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials every year. Of course, every year we got "Frosty" and "Rudolph," but I was always more excited for the rarities like "The Stingiest Man in Town" or "The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold."

The issue is this DVD release. Warner Bros has this problem where they just can't seem to do Rankin/Bass the justice they deserve. They keep releasing the specials, but always as part of a collection so that if you want them all you end up buying the same episodes over and over again. Case in point: "The Stingiest Man in Town," "The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold," and "Pinocchio's Christmas" are all in both the Classic Christmas...

Great quality transfer!
Considering how I bought one of the early DVD Rankin/Bass Christmas special sets back in 2001, I've been waiting for a long time to be able to buy these. Fortunately since I held out, I didn't end up double dipping.
The quality of the transfer itself is pretty good. It definitely isn't something that they took the time to improve the quality of, but if you ask me it doesn't really need it. Everything is still clear and the lighting is still just as I remember it.
It took a little extra time for it to be shipped, but this is probably due to the DVDs being made as they are ordered. (I think it took an extra 2-3 days or so from the time I ordered it.) But was totally worth it to not have to wait around for these specials to MAYBE be shown on tv. (Good luck finding Stingiest Man in Town on network tv, and the others haven't been shown on a certain Christmas movie marathon in at least a year, possibly two!)
The menu is VERY barebones--it is literally a picture of the...

Well, at least it's finally out
With this release, 'Little Drummer Boy Book II' finally is available on DVD. Yes, the other three programs have already been released on two other collections [Classic Christmas Favorites (Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! / The Year Without a Santa Claus / Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July / Rudolph's Shiny New Year) and Santa's Magical Stories (Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas / The Year Without a Santa Claus / Jack Frost)] thus you'll be double dipping, but at this point, we have no choice. I'm still waiting for one boxed set with all the Rankin Bass holiday specials but that may never come. I'm just glad Drummer Boy II is finally available.
